Keap and ActiveCampaign sit in the same airspace. Both do email automation, both have a CRM, both promise to replace four other tools. Once you spend real time inside them, they are not interchangeable.
This is the comparison I run for clients on a discovery call when they have already half-decided and want a second opinion. No affiliate links, no review bait, just where each one wins and loses in the real world.
Pricing in the real world
Headline pricing is misleading on both. This is what clients actually pay once they are using the platforms properly.
- ●ActiveCampaign Plus: ~$70/mo at 1,000 contacts, ~$200/mo at 10,000. The sales pipeline features start at the Plus tier, not Lite.
- ●Keap Pro: ~$200/mo all-in, 1,500 contacts included. Add-ons for SMS and extra contacts add up fast.
- ●Keap Max: ~$300/mo all-in, with lead scoring, sales analytics, and the marketing automation layer fully available.
- ●ActiveCampaign at 25,000 contacts is meaningfully cheaper than Keap. Keap at 1,500 contacts with active sales pipeline is the better value.
Where ActiveCampaign wins
- ●Email deliverability. ActiveCampaign's sending reputation is among the best in the SMB space.
- ●Email design and editing. The drag-and-drop editor is materially better than Keap's.
- ●Conditional content and dynamic segments. Way more flexible.
- ●Site tracking and event-based automations. Cleaner setup, fewer edge cases.
- ●API and integration network. Larger community, more native integrations.
Where Keap wins
- ●Native quotes, invoices, and payments. ActiveCampaign needs a third tool for this. Keap has it built in.
- ●Lifecycle automation across sales and ops. Tag-and-campaign is hard to teach but unbeatable once it clicks.
- ●Native scheduling and forms that hand off cleanly. Less duct tape between tools.
- ●Phone and SMS at scale. Keap Business Line is built in. ActiveCampaign farms SMS to a partner.
- ●Migration help and onboarding. Keap will assign a real human. ActiveCampaign onboarding is largely self-serve.
The direct dealbreakers
Each platform has one or two real weaknesses people only find after they have committed.
- ●Keap's email designer is dated. If your brand needs polished visual emails, you will fight it.
- ●Keap's reporting is opinionated. If you live in dashboards, you will end up exporting to Sheets or Looker Studio.
- ●ActiveCampaign's CRM is light. If you have real opportunity values, multi-stage pipelines, or quote workflows, you will hit ceilings.
- ●ActiveCampaign has no native commerce. You will need Stripe + Zapier + an invoicing tool, where Keap has all three in one.
Which one to pick
The choice is not about features. It is about where the work actually lives.
- ●Pick ActiveCampaign if: you are primarily doing marketing automation, you have a separate sales CRM (HubSpot Free, Pipedrive, even a spreadsheet), and you care most about email quality.
- ●Pick Keap if: you are running a service business or coaching practice where the sales process and the operations layer matter as much as the email, and you want fewer tools to manage.
- ●Pick neither if: you are doing high-volume ecommerce. Klaviyo or HubSpot is a better fit.
Switching costs nobody warns you about
Whichever way you go, the switch is not just an export-import. Tag taxonomies do not translate, automation logic does not migrate cleanly, and your historical reporting resets. Budget 30 to 60 days for a clean migration, not a weekend.
